Northeast Communities Against Substance Abuse (NECASA) will present the 6th Annual Judith Nilan Award to Mark Chuoke, a special education teacher at Woodstock Academy. Mark, in addition to his teaching duties, co-developed the Peer Helper’s Club; developed and runs the Unified Theater, a student-led theater group for youth with and without disabilities to shine; advises the Gay Straight Alliance; and co-founded the Boy’s Council Group, which is a strengths-based group approach to promote boys’ safe and healthy passage through pre-teen and adolescent years.
The Judith Nilan Award was created in 2006 to honor the life and work of Judith Nilan, the school social worker at Woodstock Middle School who was murdered in 2005. Judith worked with NECASA for many years to bring drug prevention and anti-violence programs to the students and families of Woodstock Middle School. Judith was a compassionate individual who respected and nurtured all of her students. The first award was dedicated to Judith and presented to her husband Jon Baker and her children (2006). The Award recognizes one school social worker, psychologist, guidance counselor, teacher, principal or vice-principal who promotes positive youth development, drug prevention and anti-violence.
The Judith Nilan Award will be presented on Wednesday, November 9th at the NECASA Annual meeting.
